Tree Fest Ottawa: Pond Restoration History

Tree Fest Ottawa: Pond Exploration

During this pond exploration session, we will be doing some collection demonstrations of fish and benthic invertebrates at the pond. We will also look in detail at what creatures we collect. Tree Fest Ottawa: Invasive Flowering Rush Removal

Date:  Sunday 24 September 2017 -
Location:  Brewer Pond Park (Brewer Way)
Time:  10:00am - 01:00pm

This day we will be an action event, where we will be removing the invasive Flowering Rush in the pond shallow areas. We will be providing waders, gloves, shovels and bags for this event. Please RSVP for this event as we will require your shoe size to provide our volunteers with waders to participate in this aquatic removal event.

Glad Clean up the Capital Event

Date:  Saturday 30 September 2017 -
Location:  Pinecrest Creek
Time:  10:00am - 12:00pm

We will be doing stream garbage clean up at Pinecrest Creek. There are several areas that require attention so depending on the number of volunteers we will be selecting a couple of areas to clean up within the stream and riparian area. Please do RSVP so we can plan ahead the places we can clean up in this stream. Our meeting location will be determined by the number of volunteers for this event, so please do wait for follow up details for this event.

Volunteer Field Sampling

Date:  Monday 02 October 2017 - Tuesday 31 October 2017
Location:  3889 Rideau Valley Drive, Manotick (corner of Prince of Wales and Jockvale)

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is looking for volunteers to help with field sampling during the month of October.

Volunteers will gain experience with the following:

  • YSI
  • Field experience
  • Secchi disk
  • Composite sampler
  • Van Doren
  • Canoeing
  • Kick and sweep techniques for benthic invertebrates
  • Water flow measurements

Field sampling will take place Monday-Friday, typically between 8 am to 4 pm, however some days may go longer. There is no set number of days that volunteers will be required to do.

Volunteers should be comfortable around water, wearing chest waders, wading through streams and touching benthic invertebrates.

Volunteers will need to arrange their own transportation to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority office located at 3889 Rideau Valley Drive in Manotick.
