What’s involved?
Site Visit
Site Plan
Staff will work with you to develop a custom planting plan taking into account your vision and needs for the property. Staff will take care of ordering all required trees and materials for the project.

Site preparation
In the fall ahead of planting, staff will prepare the site as required, including mowing the area and marking planting lines. In spring staff may also plant cover crops.
Tree planting and tending
In spring, we’ll deliver and plant your trees, returning in the fall for a survival assessment and tending as required.
Survival Assessments
Forestry staff will visit your property after 1, 3 and 5 years to assess the health of the new trees and refill areas that did not survive.
To qualify
Owners must:
- Have a minimum of 0.25 Ha (0.62 acres) of suitable land
- Order a minimum of 500 trees
- Agree to reasonably protect the trees from damage
Landowners must:
Have a minimum of 0.5 Ha (1.25 acre) of suitable land
Order a minimum of 1,000 trees
Agree to reasonably protect the trees from damage

Don’t meet our full-service criteria? Our wholesale tree purchasing program allows rural landowners to order native tree species at greatly-reduced prices so they can do the planting themselves. First come, first served while supplies last.

Living Snow Fence Program

Rural Ottawa residents can improve road safety and support sustainability while receiving $700/acre/year for 10 years to plant living snow fences that prevent blowing snow from impacting public roads. Planting area must be in open fields along a City of Ottawa road allowance, and landowners must commit to keeping the trees for at least 10 years. All preparation, maintenance and assessments completed by RVCA at no cost to the landowner.

Butternut Recovery Program

If you have a healthy, seed-bearing butternut on your property or wish to plant free butternut seedlings on your land, learn more and get in touch!
This landowner-focused program offers landowner advice for butternut maintenance, tracks healthy butternut locations for seed collection and grows disease-tolerant seedlings for free distribution.
