Help us track native plants and animals during local BioBlitz events

OTTAWA, September 12, 2025 – The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) invites nature lovers, community scientists and curious minds to take part in its first-ever BioBlitz events at two local conservation areas this September.

Part of the Great Canadian BioBlitz campaign led by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, BioBlitz events bring communities together to celebrate biodiversity and contribute to a growing database of plants, mammals, birds, insects, fungi and more.

Using the iNaturalist app on a smartphone, tablet, or digital camera, participants can help uncover the incredible wildlife thriving right here at home – or the invasive species we want to remove. Every observation helps us better understand and protect native plants and animals in our conservation areas.

RVCA BioBlitz Dates:

  • Brown Natural Area, Richmond – Thursday, September 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Chapman Mills Conservation Area, Barrhaven – Friday, September 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This is our first time joining this Canada-wide event, and we’re thrilled to be part of it,” said Adrienne Lewis, RVCA Conservation Land Technician. “It’s a chance to get outside, explore our conservation areas and discover the incredible variety of wildlife that often goes unnoticed right in our own backyards.”

Registration is required, but no experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity, smartphone or tablet and love of the outdoors. RVCA staff will be onsite to guide participants and ensure a safe, hands-on experience.

“The BioBlitz is a fun and easy way to get involved in conservation,” said Rosario Castanon-Escobar, RVCA City Stream Watch Coordinator. “Every photo and observation contributes to real scientific knowledge, helping us protect the plants, animals and ecosystems that make our watershed so special.”
