RIDEAU LAKES, Sept 17, 2026 – It’s the most wonderful time of the year: the air is crisp, the sky is blue and forests are becoming brilliant cathedrals of reds, yellows and golds.
And now the RVCA’s forestry team is offering a chance to discover the science behind those colours during a free guided hike on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Beginning at 10 a.m., the Fall Colours & Forestry Guided Hike will follow the blue and orange trails at Mill Pond Conservation Area, a former sugar bush between Portland and Lombardy which offers vibrant fall foliage far from the crowds.
“We’re excited to welcome visitors to Mill Pond during its most spectacular season – especially people who have never discovered this hidden gem before,” said RVCA forestry manager Ian Cochrane, who will lead the hike. “This is a great opportunity to reconnect with nature, enjoy the fall and learn something along the way.”
The 3-km loop is considered easy to moderate, with a few steep slopes and exposed roots and rocks at various spots. The hike will wrap up with light refreshments.
