BioBlitz welcomes citizen scientists to document Baxter Conservation Area

OTTAWA, May 5, 2026 – Spend the day outside learning about local species and contributing to the scientific record during a special BioBlitz event at Baxter Conservation Area.

On Wednesday, May 13, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) invites people of all ages and abilities to explore the conservation area while documenting as many flora & fauna species as possible using the free iNaturalist app. No special training or knowledge is required – all you need is a smart device, the iNaturalist app with an account, and an interest in learning more about the local ecosystem.

“This is such a cool event because you’re learning about local species in real time, while also directly supporting on-the-ground conservation,” said City Stream Watch coordinator Rosario Castanon Escobar. “A BioBlitz helps us identify species at risk that may be living on site, and to document invasive species and areas of concern to guide future conservation projects.”

Staff will be set up at the Baxter picnic shelter from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. Participants can stay for the whole time, or pop in for a shorter period. They should download the iNaturalist app and join the “BioBlitz at Baxter Conservation Area Project” in advance. Participants are encouraged to register in advance.

The event is the first of three RVCA BioBlitz events supported by the TD Friends of the Environment Fund this summer. The funding will be used for monitoring equipment and supplies, including chest waders, acoustic recorders, nets, an underwater camera and specialized phone camera lenses.

“We’re so grateful for TDFEF’s support,” Castanon Escobar said. “Monitoring the watershed’s biodiversity ensures we are able to more effectively mitigate issues such as declining water quality or the spread of invasive species, while also better supporting species at risk habitat on our properties.”

The next event will take place at W.A. Taylor Conservation Area in Osgoode on June 16.
