Pumpkin spice is back on the menu, which means you're probably planning your annual fall colours roadtrip to Spy Rock! Foley Mountain Conservation Area is a popular spot this time of year, and crowds are a given. Consider these tips to make sure your visit is a hit:
1. Peak on the off-peak
Weekends and afternoons are predictably very busy, so plan to visit early in the day, mid-week or even to catch the sunset. You'll face shorter lines and are more likely to get a prime parking spot.
2. Bring change or pay online
Pack your toonies and loonies for the pay machine! Credit cards can take a long time to process, leading to longer line-ups. You can also buy your $8 day pass through www.PayByPhone.com (location code 5204) when you arrive on site. We don't recommend buying your pass in advance during peak season in case the park is full.
3. Take the road less travelled
Instead of fighting for parking at the lookout, why not drive further down the road to the Interpretive Centre and take the Rideau Trail back to Spy Rock? It's a gorgeous, easy hike that will make your $8 entry fee worth every penny. 4. Spend the day
Foley Mountain is not just a lookout – it's also a premier hiking destination with 10 kilometres of trails for all skill levels, a natural beach and spacious picnic areas. Pack a picnic and plan to spend the day in the park - once you've arrived early and ahead of the crowds, of course.
5. Have a backup plan
If you're making a special trip from far away – especially on a weekend – be prepared to be turned away at the gate and have a backup activity in mind. Unfortunately, given parking capacity limits, some vehicles may have to be turned away on peak weekends, even if it's just for an hour. Be prepared to pass the time on a Westport patio (oh darn)!
