Summer Student — Stewardship Labourer

You will work out of our head office located in Beryl Gaffney Park just outside of Manotick. Public transportation is limited; candidates should ensure they have reliable transportation prior to applying. Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Field work in remote areas of the watershed may result in longer days.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is the lead inter-municipal agency working to address river-related environmental issues and concerns within the Rideau Valley watershed. It’s our job to make sure that the water is looked after by everyone in today’s society so that tomorrow’s generations inherit a clean, healthy, functioning watershed. We also provide residents with close-to-home natural areas and programs that are accessible and affordable. We currently own and maintain a network of nine Conservation Areas and an additional 4,500 acres of environmental land. Under direct supervision, you will prepare and tend planting sites by mowing, watering, weeding and herbicide spraying. You will also pack trees for distribution; haul equipment and trees to planting sites and hand-plant seedlings. You will gather and record data for species at risk planting projects by measuring trees and conducting visual assessments. You will perform general maintenance and repairs to equipment as needed. As the ideal candidate, you are a post-secondary student in a forestry program or a related program, and you have some experience hand-planting, spraying and tending seedlings. You don’t mind working in adverse weather conditions like heat and rain. The physically demanding work requires that you are able to navigate unstable terrain and lift up to 50 lbs. You must have a valid G2 or better driver’s license and a relatively clean driving record.

If you have a strong commitment to the environment and the protection of land and water resources, please send us your resume before February 9, 2018.
