Student Jobs: Water Resource Technician

You will work out of our head office located in Beryl Gaffney Park just outside of Manotick. There is no public transportation to the worksite; candidates should ensure they have reliable transportation prior to applying.

Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Field work in remote areas of the watershed may result in longer days. You will also be required to work evenings and weekends.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is the lead intermunicipal agency working to address river-related environmental issues and concerns within the Rideau Valley watershed. Thanks to our many partners, the scope of our environmental protection work includes planning, source water protection, tackling flooding and erosion problems and researching water movement and use in the valley. We help people maintain healthy shorelines, provide advice on development-related issues and report to municipalities, agencies and the public about watershed conditions and trends. We also provide public access to natural waterfront areas, deliver community-based stewardship programs, reduce water pollution and protect fish and wildlife habitat.

As one of several Water Resource Technicians, you will be working alongside our experienced staff learning the skills required to sustain our watershed. You’ll assist with the collection, entry and/or analysis of water resources data related to one or more of the following: groundwater, surface water, geomorphology, meteorology, water quality (benthics and chemistry), stream habitat surveys and fish community sampling. You’ll learn how to use and maintain specialized equipment and tools. You may receive comprehensive training for conducting water sampling on lakes and rivers. You may have the opportunity to become familiar with the identification of insect and fish species.

As the ideal candidate, you are a post-secondary student or recent graduate majoring in biology, ecology, fish and wildlife, environmental studies or other related program. Preference may be given to candidates with experience operating boats. The physically demanding work requires that you are able to navigate unstable terrain and lift up to 50 lbs. You don’t mind working in adverse weather conditions like heat and rain and you are comfortable working in, on and around water. Your personal schedule should be flexible enough to accommodate the demands of the work schedule. You must hold a Class G2 or higher driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

If you have a strong commitment to the environment and the protection of land and water resources, and if your education and career goals lead naturally to working in a Conservation Authority environment, please send us your resume and cover letter by February 24, 2023 to: e-mail:
