Student Jobs: Stewardship Labourer

You will work out of our head office located in Beryl Gaffney Park just outside of Manotick. Public transportation is limited; candidates should ensure they have reliable transportation prior to applying.

Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Field work in remote areas of the watershed may result in longer days.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is the lead intermunicipal agency working to address river-related environmental issues and concerns within the Rideau Valley watershed. Thanks to our many partners, the scope of our environmental protection work includes planning, source water protection, tackling flooding and erosion problems and researching water movement and use in the valley. We help people maintain healthy shorelines, provide advice on development-related issues and report to municipalities, agencies and the public about watershed conditions and trends. We also provide public access to natural waterfront areas, deliver community-based stewardship programs, reduce water pollution and protect fish and wildlife habitat.

Under direct supervision, you will prepare and tend planting sites by mowing, watering, weeding and herbicide spraying. You will also pack trees for distribution; haul equipment and trees to planting sites and hand-plant seedlings. You will gather and record data for species at risk planting projects by measuring trees and conducting visual assessments. You will perform general maintenance and repairs to equipment as needed.

As the ideal candidate, you are a post-secondary student or recent graduate in a forestry program or a related program, and you have some experience hand-planting, spraying and tending seedlings. You don’t mind working in adverse weather conditions like heat and rain. The physically demanding work requires that you are able to navigate unstable terrain and lift up to 50 lbs. You must have a valid G2 or higher driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

If you have a strong commitment to the environment and the protection of land and water resources, please send us your resume and cover letter by February 24, 2023 to: e-mail:
