Outdoor Education Assistant – Baxter Conservation Area
The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is the lead intermunicipal agency working to address water- related environmental issues and concerns within the Rideau Valley watershed. Thanks to our many partners, the scope of our environmental protection work includes planning, source water protection, tackling flooding and erosion problems and researching water movement and use in the valley. We help people maintain healthy shorelines, provide advice on development-related issues and report to municipalities, agencies and the public about watershed conditions and trends. We also provide public access to natural waterfront areas, deliver community-based stewardship programs, reduce water pollution and protect fish and wildlife habitat.
Permanent Part-Time (35 hours a week while programs are running)
Schedule is 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday while programs are running with occasional evenings/weekends. The incumbent will not work weeks between program end/start dates and observed holidays (similar to a school board schedule).
You will work at the Baxter Conservation Area located just south of Kars. There is no public transportation to the worksite; candidates should ensure they have reliable transportation prior to applying.
You will assist with the development, planning, delivery and evaluation of outdoor and environmental education programs for children and adults of all ages. Program participants include elementary and high school groups, university students, Baxter Forest School students, community groups and day camps. The Outdoor Education Assistant will be working both indoors and outdoors with most work done in an outdoor environment facilitating programs in all kinds of weather conditions.
You will also act as a resource person in the Interpretive Centre and you will assist in delivering services to visitors such as answering questions about the park and programs, selling park passes and monitoring for valid park passes. You will also help maintain the cleanliness and safety features of our park facilities.
As the ideal candidate you hold a post-secondary diploma or degree in education, early childhood education, environmental studies, natural science, outdoor recreation or a related program. Additionally, you have experience with the Forest School model as well as play-based learning, risky play, loose parts, inquiry-based learning, and a child centered learning environment. You will also be expected to hold a valid Ontario G class driver’s licence (or equivalent) and be able to provide a driving record deemed acceptable by the RVCA. You must also be able to obtain a clear vulnerable sector check and hold standard first aid & CPR or be able to obtain within your first three months of employment. Knowledge of the natural world, an Ontario teacher’s certificate and bilingualism (English/French) will be considered strong assets.
