Why another Rideau River Study?
Studies have been done in the past (1978 and 1992) that focused on protecting and restoring the water quality in the lower Rideau River. These studies were beneficial; however somewhat limited. They did not apply the "watershed as an eco-system" approach" — which is now a well-accepted concept in watershed management.

More recently, the Rideau River Biodiversity Project, the Rideau River Round Table's State of the River Report — 2001, together with ongoing environmental monitoring efforts over the past decade, have carefully examined the condition of the river as an aquatic ecosystem, and some of the factors influcding it.
